Thank goodness for the equaliser v Rylands. Down 0-1 until the 82nd minute would have meant for a few twitches amongst the terrific 1180 crowd. Although we weren't able to cement our season, it does mean that we remain in charge of our own destiny going into the final three matches. Winning 0-1 at Colne, Marine also conceded an equaliser in the 82nd minute and finished with a draw. As such, they remain 6 points behind Reds having also played 35 games. They are however, now assured of a play off berth. Technically they could still win the league, but with a pile of unlikely results going their way. Rylands are without a fixture today. They visit 1874 Northwich on Easter Monday who rattled in 7-0 v Market Drayton last outing. Rylands host Bootle on the final day.
Given the regularity that Market Drayton concede heavily, could it be possible for Reds to overtake Rylands goal difference? Rylands are currently 12 better off than Reds on GD. If that does happen (albeit unlikely), then a draw at Marine would be good enough, but a win of course would mean that 1-0 wins over Kendal and Market Drayton would suffice.
Marine are 4th with 74 points from 35 games
Reds are 2nd with 80 points from 35 games
Marine at home 12-1-4 (this is 3rd best home record behind Rylands and Reds)
Reds away 12-4-1 (the best in the league)
Recent Marine results:
9 April Colne 1-1 Marine
2 April Marine 0-0 Widnes
26 Mar Mossley 1-1 Marine
22 Mar Marine 0-2 Clitheroe
19 Mar Glossop NE 0-2 Marine
12 Mar Marine 1-0 1874 Northwich
Marine overall since 1 Feb 4-5-1
Reds overall since 1 Feb 5-3-1
Marine's recent form sees them without a win in their last 4. A home defeat by Clitheroe followed by 3 draws. Reds are undefeated in six matches, and also boast the best away record in the league.
Current top of the league using played and points & GD
Rylands 36 81 +56
Reds 35 80 +44
Leek 35 75 +38
Marine 35 74 +26
We have to assume that Rylands will win both their remaining fixtures - at 1874 Northwich, and home to Bootle. As such, Reds really need to come away with three points from this one. A draw would mean two wins are required, both involving a bag full of goals scored. A defeat will almost certainly confine us to the dreaded play offs.
Other matches don't really affect us anymore, but Runcorn (5th) v Leek (3rd) could be important in determining final positions.
Given that Reds should easily win their final two matches of the campaign, our season really comes down now to this fixture. Win it, and we almost certainly win the title and the sole automatic promotion position. Come on you Reds.
