Couldn't agree more. These informative and consistent pre match posts add massively to my understanding and enjoyment as we go into games. Thanks so much. Thanks you garstang and to chrisb for the kind words. Unfortunately it has indeed turned out to be my last pre match post for the season. Disappointment is indescribable. I was actually awake from 0400 and following on the LS. At 2-1 up going into injury time, I was just hoping we could hang on. As they say, the rest is history. My first Reds games were at the end of the Division 2 season when we lost our league status in 1977. I was there every week almost from then until leaving Workington in 1985. Then it was the occasional match away in Lancashire and Cheshire (I was living in Manchester / Widnes / Chorley between 85 and 97) along with the odd one back at Borough Park. There have of course been many further disappointments since then. Relegations.... play off losses. Following the most recent relegation it looked as though we would make it back at the first attempt. That was March 2020 and of course we managed to get ripped off by the league. The subsequent short season we were not top of the league but would have still been top on PPG across the two curtailed seasons. Then at the 3rd attempt we managed to scuttle ourselves having been in a position to win the league right up until almost the final whistle of the regular season. Nuff said. I will be back in July as we prepare for our 4th season at this level. Thanks to you all for the contributions you make on this forum. As an overseas supporter who doesn't do social media, I am here almost daily checking to see what's going on. Come on you Reds.

Been great reading all the stuff on here… As for last night…. Good players don’t become bad ones, I’d hope the majority sign up for next season. The club certainly need a lift though to keep up the momentum and great work done this year…is that 5 1000 plus gates in a row? I feel for Chris Willock, decent guy- he’s made some great signings at key times. Up to the board I guess as to what happens next….truth is the last few weeks haven’t been good enough. Unlocking that puzzle is key to next year….whatever it takes. We shouldn’t be at this level….it’s tough getting out. Issue is we are in with up and coming clubs with good playing budgets. Macc town to deal with next year amongst others. Then next season it will be the cash of Bury FC and FC Isle of Man!

Barrow took the plunge and made a managerial change late in the season and survived, Red's didn't and the rest is now history. Too many players now past their best and not up to this low level. Looks like another rebuild job for the likes of Danny Grainger if he's available.

Personally think it’s dangerous being a bit hasty… Age wise these players ain’t past their best….what’s caused this demise is difficult to say. I thought some dodgy pitches didn’t help but prepared to rule that out. A couple of key signings rather than a clear out for me - leaders. Can’t help feeling that lad we signed from Avro ticked all the boxes before it fell through. Club captain and proven at this level. Injuries, don’t think it helped, our pressing game fell away badly..mentally also I think we’d probably be a challenge for some of the worlds greatest psychologists! Leave it in the boards capable hands…

You do a good job Peter.
When you think it can't get any worse Reds always find a way to make you suffer more!
Since February we have stuttered along before that we played some really good stuff and the 2 null and void seasons under Danny we were excellent.
But in the end nothing to show for all our efforts.
Incredible how we just can't get over the line time after time no other club suffers like us.

Why and how did we go from a team that "finished" top of the two COVID interrupted seasons and put together a run a over 10 twins in a row in this season, turn into a team that can't beat Market Drayton? Why didn't we get promoted? Because we simply weren't good enough in the last quarter of the season. Unless action is taken at the top I don't know how we can improve next season.

our last 6 or 8 home games have been rubbish, the only goals we score are off free kicks or mistakes or clarkies special.we are lucky if we make 2 decent chances all game by playing football. marine were by far the better team last night but should have lost as the ref added at least 2 extra mins to the 5 that was announced. Chris you are nice bloke but its time for you to go.

Looks like another rebuild job for the likes of Danny Grainger if he's available. I think that's possibly a little harsh on the players. None of the current squad are too old. But we certainly aren't getting the best out of them and many do look like a shaddow of their former selves. We need to add a couple bits of quality which will bring competition for places, but for me we need a change in the dugout and the style of football we are playing. I heard whispers from people at the club early on that they didn't think much of the manager and that he may be out of his depth. I now agree. I was excited by the appointment and thought the board made a decent, sensible call at the time. But for me it hasn't worked out as we hoped. Given the circumstances with injuries early on in the season, another manager may well have struggled more than wilcock. But the last quarter of the season has been painful to watch in almost every sense. Poor results, poor performances and poor entertainment. As a reds fan, even if we had managed to sneak up this season, I don't want to watch that hoofball, scrappy, battle every week. There are times you need to do that but previous seasons have proved it's not the only way, nor the best way.

Macclesfield, Runcorn/Marine, Clitheroe, Bootle, Witton, Leek - they will all be strong next season. Plus I expect Colne & Kidsgrove to be there or thereabouts. Hope I'm wrong but I have a foreboding that we have blown our best ever chance. Big decisions ahead for the Board.

Im torn on the manager issue really because i think Willcock gave us the ability to win ugly which i don't think we had under Danny Grainger He also brought in some really good players though i dont know if this was down to more money or contacts I think we'd have struggled to be anywhere near in contention losing so many to injury in the opening weeks of the season in previous seasons. But something has just gone wrong lately and a mark of a good manager is to try and change it. We stuck rigidly to the same 1 striker formation and didnt try anything different a side from shifting players around and the standard of play has been really poor for 2 months. Almost unwatchable and Results were probably better than performances should have delivered.
Im most concerned that nothing was tried differently to try and get more goals. Ultimately not scoring enough despite a wealth of proven goalscorers in the squad has cost us. We had an inferior goal difference putting Rylands as favourites and when we needed Goals on Saturday and in ET last night we had no-one to deliver them.
Cant fault the players efforts weve just not been good enough in the run in.

Think that's the most baffling thing. The same lads who have done so well in past seasons and a good portion of this one have really under performed in last few months. Despite that we still had chance after chance to get over the line and just the tiniest amount of luck would have been enough. As others have said the Reds are playing at least one if not two levels down from where we should be. Our supporters are much more passionate about their club than others at this level and our attendances are better than most in the league above never mind this one so the thought of travelling to these same teams again a lot with very basic facilities is so depressing

Again the npl west will again probably be the strongest of all the divisions at this step unfortunately we will have to make the best of it,now we have the interest back in the club I honestly dont think it will affect our crowds whatever division we are in as long as are winning games, hard to believe that we struggled to get 500 in the conference north

Yeah the naming of the divisions probably helps as npl west and npl don't sound much different. But I don't think anyone in West Cumbria really cares. So long as we are winning we will get 700+. After all the big crowds this season I would like to think we will have a little extra in next season's budget to add some quality and competition for places. The main thing is the club do something to try and maintain the interest this season has generated. A big name signing, a couple of big club friendly fixtures something like that. Lots of publicity too, get stories in the paper about the new stadium plans etc. Of course all of this is easier said than done
