Failure to win at home. And against a team who had lost 5 of their 6 away fixtures. Failure to score a goal. Have a penalty saved. Sounds pretty bad...........but we are up to 2nd! As Mr Greaves said many times....funny old game.
We should have already been to Macclesfield - back on 8 October, but the game was postponed due to their continued involvement in the FAT. That ended yesterday when they lost at home 0-2 to Guiseley. This will be our first meeting with Macclesfield. All our previous meetings were against Macclesfield Town - a club that went to the wall in September 2020 with debts over £500,000. Playing their first season as Macclesfield in the NWC Premier Division, they were crowned champions and subsequently were promoted into NPLW. There average home attendance last season was 3390.
Not surprisingly, they have started life in NPLW as the team expected to win the league. They are top of the league, but not unbeatable having suffered 3 defeats from their 11 games so far, 2 of them at home.
Macclesfield are 1st with 24 points from 11 games
Reds are 2nd with 21 points from 12 games
Macclesfield at home 4-0-2
Reds away 3-1-1
Recent Macclesfield results:
29 Oct Macclesfield 0-2 Guiseley (FAT1R)
22 Oct Macclesfield 0-1 1874 Northwich
18 Oct Macclesfield 3-0 Newcastle Town
15 Oct Glossop NE 1-2 Macclesfield
8 Oct Macclesfield 6-1 Bamber Bridge (FAT3QR)
1 Oct Macclesfield 1-2 Bootle
27 Sept Macclesfield 5-0 Kidsgrove
24 Sept Macclesfield 5-1 Widnes (FAT2QR)
20 Sept Ramsbottom 0-5 Macclesfield
17 Sept Coalville Town 1-0 Macclesfield (FAC2QR)
13 Sept Macclesfield 7-0 Tadcaster (FAT1QR)
6 Sept Witton 1-0 Macclesfield
3 Sept West Didsbury & Chorlton 0-1 Macclesfield (FAC1QR)
Macclesfield overall since 1 Sept 8-0-5
Reds overall since 1 Sept 5-2-2
Had we played as planned on 8 Oct., our visit would have been straight after their defeat at home to Bootle. As it turns out, our visit this week comes on the back of their other home defeat to 1874 Northwich, and indeed Saturday's FAT loss to Guiseley. Reds are now undefeated in six games. Could this be the right time to visit Macclesfield? Although even a win will not take us to the top of the league, it would take us level on points with Macclesfield. The gap between 2nd and 12th is only 3 points.
Hopefully Reds will enjoy the atmosphere of the large crowd and turn on the style. A win here would be a terrific boost. Come on you Reds.
