Another welcome three points v Newcastle, and by all accounts some good football played by Reds. Four of the top five teams won, the exception being Runcorn who lost ....at home ....to ..... Leek Town.
Reds have gained 26 points from the last 30, Leek have gained 24 points from the same possible 30. Somewhat ironically, their last defeat at home was v Runcorn on 3 Dec.
This is a match up of two teams, both now ensconced in the play off positions, and possibly challenging for the title should Macclesfield happen to slip up. Is this a must win? I would argue possibly not. As things stand, the top three are well ahead of 4th and 5th. Although we have witnessed strange things happen many times before, as things stand at the moment, you would have to think Macclesfield will win the league, and Reds will meet Leek in the play off final. I know...that's a long way off. And we did see upsets in the play offs last year. Should we lose however, we will be 6 points adrift of Leek, possibly ending any small hop of winning the league. Do we take a draw now if it was on offer? A Reds win would of course would be terrific given Leek's form.
Leek are 2nd with 53 points from 24 games
Reds are 3rd with 50 points from 24 games
Leek at home 8-2-2
Reds away 8-2-2
Recent Leek results:
28 Jan Runcorn 0-1 Leek
17 Jan Skem 2-4 Leek
10 Jan Leek 3-0 Hednesford (Staffs Senior Cup 2R)
7 Jan Macclesfield 4-0 Leek
2 Jan Leek 2-1 1874 Northwich
26 Dec Newcastle Town 1-2 Leek
17 Dec Leek 3-2 Bootle
3 Dec Leek 0-2 Runcorn
26 Nov Leek 1-0 Colne
19 Nov Chorley 1-0 Leek (FAT2R)
15 Nov Leek 3-0 Widnes
12 Nov Leek 3-2 Clitheroe
5 Nov Witton Albion 1-2 Leek
1 Nov Trafford 0-2 Leek
Leek overall since 1 Nov 11-0-3
Reds overall since 1 Nov 9-2-1
Only 2 draws between both teams in 26 matches. Perhaps this match is destined for an elusive draw?
Other top of the table fixtures today:
Bootle v Macclesfield (1st)
Colne v Runcorn (4th)
Widnes v Mossley (5th)
I don't usually include Macclesfield, but this could be a tricky trip for them, and if there is a winner at Leek, then some pressure could be put on them. Macclesfield are yet to play Reds, Runcorn and Mossley.
Reds are currently 8 points clear of 4th placed Mossley. If offered to me right now - I would take the draw.....but hope for more.
Come on you Reds.
