Well here we are. A day we have all been waiting many weeks for. Our first match at this level since our promotion in April. Apologies again for lack of pre season friendly match previews. Spent 7 weeks in England and Greece - including three stints in Workington and was just too hard to do them. Home now though and back on deck for the new season.
It's been a long few years......again, in Reds' history. We last played at this level on 27 April 2019. A 5-1 defeat at Scarborough Athletic. The result was arbitrary as we had already been relegated. We finished 21st of 22 with 29 points. Marine finished one place above us on 40 points. North Ferriby were officially last, although their record is a line of zeros given their winding up. Farsley Celtic won the league with 90 points, 3 more than South Shields.
Reds last victory in NPL Premier was on 23 March 2019 with a 0-1 win at Whitby. The last victory at Borough Park was on 19 January 2019 defeating Bamber Bridge 2-1.
Fast forward four years and we are finally back after a number of unexpected and unusual obstacles prevented a prior return. Our first opponents are Ashton Utd.
Ashton's recent history is: 1992 - promoted to NPL Division 1 2002 - promoted to NPL Premier 2004 - transferred to the new Conference North 2005 - relegated to NPL Premier 2018 - promoted to National League North 2019 - relegated to NPL Premier
Reds finished 2022-2023 season 3rd in NPL West with 75 points from 38 games and had to win two play off games to gain promotion. Ashton Utd finished 2022-2023 season in NPL Premier with 53 points from 42 games. That was 7 points clear of relegation, and 15 points adrift of the play offs.
Reds record at home last season 11-4-4 Ashton Utd record away last season 8-5-8
Reds have played 7 friendlies with a record of 5-0-2 Ashton Utd have played 5 friendlies with a record of 3-0-2
The wait is over. Excitement has built and we are ready to start the new campaign. It's good to be back. Come on you Reds :-)

Almost the start of the season and very quiet on here, picked up my ticket this morning and plenty of final touches taking place. Let's hope we can welcome back the majority of fans from the play off games and give the team a boost as we return to the NPL premier. Ashton will be a good team and we should see the return of ex red Cole Lonsdale.

60 seasons ago Reds won promotion toDivision 3 of Football League. The start wasn't sensational but steady progress throughout. This season will be one of Consolidation but never question the commitment of the Manager and his squad. Its also 25 years since winning NWCFL, let the good times roll starting today

Welcome back Peter. Wouldn't be a proper build up to a game without your background info 👍👍

Superb today. Exactly what we needed. The only slight dissapointment was that we didn't manage to get a few more fans back from the playoff final. But even still 830 is probably the most we've had on an opening day for some time.
Their manager was quite complimentary of Reds pre game, even saying we play like Man City! We certainly did 1st half.
Well done Reds, same again Tuesday Please

that was as good as it gets in the 1st half, back to our old habits in the second half of giving the ball away in our half, we gave them 4 great chances which they made a mess of.We could be a really good team in this league if we cut out these stupid mistakes.

First half was as good as I've seen. Levels dropped a little bit in the second, but absolutely no surprise at 4-0 and then against ten men.
Fantastic start to the season and that's with a couple still to come back into the side.

Thank you Workington Red's for an excellent afternoon; l took my great grandson to his first live game - this took me back to one of my first games where a Mr Mike Commons scored 4 goals and what happened this afternoon Scotty repeated this fete. On a side note the Red's performance didn't dip in the second half; the strong wind played its part and we coped better with this than Ashton. COYR and all the best for the coming season, this team deserves 1000+ gates.

Of course, it's Reds and we will probably disappoint for the rest of the season but.... there's always the hope that we won't.

Can't complain about that performance although a couple of blokes next to me in second half done enough to last the season. Absolutely blew them away in 1st half top performances all around and all credit to everyone, players looking fitter than last season just hope that the amount of early games doesn't bring on a few injuries. Apparently those goals take Scott Allison up to 150 for the reds, you cant buy the loyalty that the long serving players give ,him Tinnion and Wordsworth a perfect spine for the team

A terrific performance to start the season and a resounding win.
It may be difficult to know how good or otherwise the opposition were, but there is little doubt that the Reds were excellent.
The back four were solid throughout, the midfield three were tenacious and creative and the attacking players all looked likely. Special mention should be given to Scotty Allison for both his finishing and the way he led the line and Conor Tinnion who was magnificent in the middle of the park.
There were times last year when Conor looked short of his best and I wondered whether he would play a big role this season, but yesterday he looked a class apart. Supported by the energy of McCarraher and the all round ability of Bobby Carroll, we ran the game in the middle of the park and looked a serious team.
There will be days when it doesn’t work, but when it does you have to appreciate them. You also have to appreciate the job done by the manager, who deserves all the credit for building such an excellent side.
Yesterday felt a long way from Market Drayton! Roll on Tuesday.

I can certainly see him coming for a month or 2 to get match fit. He's back running now I seen on twitter. Failing that I think Nugent is only a couple of weeks away from fitness so maybe an enquiry to be made there. I think we need another CF too. Injury to Reilly meant we didn't really have a CF to replace Scotty yesterday as far as I could see? And it's doubtful SA will be able to play 40 odd games with his niggles.

I made the journey down yesterday with trepidation remembering last season’s opener against Mossley when we lost 1-0 to a 96th minute disaster. But the lads put on a great display especially in the first half. Thought Tinnion was magnificent in the holding role, and of course plaudits to Allison for the 4 goals. I was right in front of the hard tackle on Carroll and amazed he was able to play on after that. I thought the new players did ok. I listened to their manager before the game and he was making out their team to be world beaters eg . Best goalie in the north west, greatest midfielder in the league etc. I wonder what he is thinking now ! Just hope we can keep it going next week, with 2 tough away assignments.COYR.
