Reds' first midweek trip, and indeed first away game of the campaign didn't quite finish with the euphoria of Saturday's opener. A 3-0 defeat at Morpeth means we have lost our top of the table status. Next up is a trip to Ilkeston Town who have two wins from two games under their belt already. For what it's worth, Ashton Utd who we flogged on Saturday, followed up with a 1-0 victory over Basford. Early days, but suggestions that the league could be pretty tight maybe?
Although Ilkeston Town are a relatively new club, we have played against the previous outfit previously. In fact, having finished the 14/15 season as runner up to FC United in the Premier League by 2 points, we hosted Ilkeston FC (5th) in the play off semi final. Unfortunately, we lost 0-1 and our season was over on 28 April 2015. Ilkeston FC subsequently lost the final away at Curzon Ashton (4th) 1-0. After a mid table finish in 2016, Ilkeston FC finished 2nd bottom just above Skem in 2017. Unfortunately, they were wound up, but a new club - Ilkeston Town FC was born soon afterwards. They took their place in the Midland Football League Division One and finished 2nd in 2018 which meant promotion to the Premier Division. In 2019 they won the Premier Division. After the subsequent Covid disruptions, in 2022, they won the NPL - Division One Midlands title. Their promotion resulted in an allocation to the Southern Football League for the 2022/2023 season. Last season saw Ilkeston finish 7th in the Southern League Premier Division Central en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022%E2%80%9323_Southern_Football_League. During the summer, they were transferred over to the NPL Premier (along with Basford United who finished 15th).
So both teams today are back in the NPL Premier together after a few years of absence.
Ilkeston are 2nd with 6 points from 2 games
Reds are 8th with 3 points from 2 games
Ilkeston results so far:
15 Aug Ilkeston 4-0 Gainsborough Trinity
12 Aug Marske Utd 1-3 Ilkeston
This will likely be another tough test for Reds. Two home games follow this match. Here's hoping we can bring a point back - or more from this game.
Come on you Reds
