After another goal fest, focus switches once more to the FAC. Reds at the moment feel a bit like Keegan's Newcastle, and Ardiles' Tottenham of old. Goals, goals, goals.
FAC on a Friday night? Surely it must be due to live TV coverage??? Perhaps not.
Reds supporters will be able to empathise with Darlo's tale of woe. Although not as long since the decline began, Darlo have been in their own strife since first losing their football league status in 1989. Brian Little was in charge back then, but followed up the relegation to the Conference with two successive promotions. Subsequent years of some success and some turmoil - including going into administration - saw them head back down to the Conference in 2010. In May 2012 the club was taken over by DFC 1883 Ltd, after the previous takeover of Darlington 1883 was expelled from the FA. The new club was placed in the Northern League Division One.
2013 Northern League Division One - Champions
2014 NPL Division One North - Runners up (Lost play off final to Ramsbottom)
2015 NPL Division One North - Runners up (Won play off final v Bamber Bridge) and promoted to NPL Premier
2016 NPL Premier - Champions. Promoted to Conference North
2017 club name was changed to the traditional Darlington FC
So Darlo have been in Conference North since 2017 finishing mid table for most of those seasons. They currently occupy their lowliest position during that time at the bottom of the league.
Darlo are 24th with 6 points from 9 games (National League North)
Reds are 15th with 9 points from 7 games (NPL Premier)
Darlo at home in the league 0-3-1
Reds away in the league 0-0-3
Recent Darlo results:
9 Sep Bishop's Stortford 1-0 Darlo
5 Sep Darlo 0-0 Boston Utd
2 Sep Buxton 5-0 Darlo
28 Aug Darlo 2-2 South Shields
26 Aug Alfreton 2-3 Darlo
19 Aug Darlo 1-1 Brackley
15 Aug Scunthorpe 4-0 Darlo
12 Aug Hereford 1-0 Darlo
5 Aug Darlo 1-3 Curzon Ashton
Darlo make their entry into FAC in this round.
When I first saw tie #7 (of 80), I was thinking that a trip to Darlo was a tough one. However, given their current position, and failure to record a home win, then maybe this is not an impossible venture for the Reds. Given the last two fixtures have seen Reds score 11 goals, then perhaps we can get something out of this trip.
As I understand it the rules for all qualifying rounds are:
Play to 90 minutes. If a draw, then a reply is required. Replay will go to ET, then penalties.
Winners of the tie receive £3375 and a place in hat for FAC3QR. Losers receive £1125
Another FAC tie would be welcomed, so here's hoping Reds can get something and progress into FAC3QR.
Come on you Reds.
